ALGIERS-The value of agricultural production of cereals exceeded DZD220 billion in 2018, including DZD 141 billion of durum wheat, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, Cherif Omari said Saturday.
Speaking at the national conference on the cereal sector development, Omari said that the value of cereals production represented 7.5% of the country's total agricultural production, offering more than 1.2 million jobs.
The cereal production remains "relatively stable," not exceeding 41 million quintals over the period of 2013 to 2018, said Omari.
However, the production volume "is not enough to cover the consumption needs in this area, which urges us to resort to importing soft wheat," he added.
While highlighting the efforts made for the development of the cereals sector, Omari said that the Government's strategy aims to "achieve complementarity between the value chains of the agricultural and agri-food sector through the supervision of all public and private sectors."
The strategy also aims to strengthen the seed improvement programme through the protection of plant resources and use of approved seeds.
The Minister also stressed the importance of providing special and adapted agricultural equipment to improve the quality of agricultural production.
